If you are on the hunt for clean, fragrance-free, skin and hair friendly products, you are definitely going to want to stick around for this post. (There is a special offer at the end.)

Are You Sick of Fragrance in Your Hair Products? Me too!

Carmen Miranda with fruit in her hairA few months ago, after trialing a shampoo and conditioner from another Curly Girl friendly company (who shall remain nameless), I was very frustrated. The two products actually worked really well and I loved how much curl I was activating…but I smelled as if a fruit salad had been dumped on my head.

No offense to Carmen, she was magnificent, but I do not want my hair to smell overwhelmingly of fruit salad. I was sitting here marinating in fruit juice when I saw Mane’s By Mel video Fragrance-Free Curly Hair Routines. I decided to go have a look at this fabulous fragrance-free line, and I was not disappointed.

The minute I landed on the Hello SEEN website words were jumping out at me:

  • Non-comedogenic,
  • Dermatologist designed,
  • Non-irritating,
  • Fragrance-free,
  • Free from formaldehyde/ formaldehyde releasers,
  • Gluten-free,
  • Sulfate-free,
  • Silicone-free,
  • Woman created and owned business,

This SILVER CURLY GIRL was all in.

No More Perfume!!

I feel like my entire life I have been SCREAMING into a void. “I don’t need perfume in my hair.”

I don’t need five different scents for the five different products I use. I don’t need to get itchy or sneezy, and I don’t need my eyes burning and watering to have a good hair day. I definitely don’t care for the breakouts (more on that in a moment). I have never thought this was too much to ask. I have tried some fragrance-free, unscented hair products in the past; they just did nothing consistent for my hair if they did anything at all.

How SEEN Began:

The creator, Dr. Iris Rubin, was feeling the same way when she conceived this idea for her products. Dr. Rubin, was frustrated by products working for her hair but ruining her skin. As with all moments of necessity, an invention was born. Being a Harvard trained dermatologist, she started testing the proverbial waters on herself, for two years she put shampoo on her face to test what caused breakouts. Later in the lab, she discovered hair product residues, even rinse out products, were left on the skin for hours.

Microscopic images of residue left on skin from shampoo, conditioner, and leave in products.

You can read all about it on her webpage dedicated to The Science behind SEEN.

Dr. Rubin took her frustration and turned into her passion. I can appreciate that. You all know I can, that’s how QuickSilverHair was born. She knew she wasn’t the only person in the world sick of sacrificing her healthy skin for her hair. She was absolutely right. I for one know all about the skin issues related to hair products.

Back Acne (Bacne)

For most of my adult life, while I never had much of an issue with facial acne, I have suffered with cystic acne on my back. I wish I had seen Dr. Rubin ten years ago, when I was severely suffering with back acne. I knew, in part, my problem was hormonal and genetic, but it was exacerbated fiercely by hair products. My back is so scarred now I never wear anything backless. I have even had doctors see my back and ask what in the world happened.

At one point, I remember the worst episode; I was trying a group of products from Milk_Shake. I absolutely fell in love with these products they made my hair silky soft and voluminous, my curls were happy, I couldn’t get enough, but my back was blistered worse than I had ever seen it in all my life. I had to ditch the products after only a couple of months of perfectly great hair; such a sad day.

I have cleaned up my skin and hair care so much, and with my hormonal changes from menopause, I no longer have the severe problem I used to have. In addition, one of the benefits of ditching the dye has been no more scalp, hairline, and neck breakouts after I dyed my hair. Because I no longer suffer with this issue, I cannot tell you it works for me, but…

The Lab Study Tells All:

Bria Labs conducted a 4-week consumer perception study of 30 people with mild to moderate back acne using only SEEN hair care products. The results speak for themselves.
After the four weeks, users reported their back breakouts were:

  • 7% clear,
  • 33% much better,
  • 37% better,
  • 17% a little better.

Award Winning Patented Hair Care

What Dr. Rubin has created is a hit; SEEN has won 8 beauty awards in just two short years. She has two patents on the formulas.

To start with all of the products are:

  • clean, vegan, cruelty-free
  • skin-caring, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), non-irritating
  • promotes stronger frizz free hair
  • protects from UV and heat damage

Clearly Clean: Every Last Drop is Yours

I don’t know about you but I often cut into bottles and tubes to clean them out because most of the product is pasted to the walls or stuck in the bottom. Not with SEEN. It is so clean all you have to do is turn your bottle upside down, as you start running out. These products are so clean that the bottle is clean when you empty it. Clearly, it is clean.

Mother Nature Marries Science

While the products are not all-natural, there is a very good reason for this. Even natural ingredients can cause allergic reactions and clog pores. Dr. Rubin focused on every ingredient being safe.

“SEEN uses formulas that are safety and skin-tested and trusted, whether made by man or nature.” Even I, Ms. Au Naturel, can understand there is such a thing as a happy marriage between man-made and nature-made.

Let’s Take a Look Inside the Bottle, SEEN Key Ingredients:

Hemisqualane: (aka C13-15 Alkane) this is a natural emollient; it is light, spreads easily, and washes away without sulfates. A new alternative to mineral oil and silicones, it performs as well at controlling and smoothing frizz as silicones, but no buildup. It also provides slip and thermal protection for heat styling.

Bisabolol: a derivative of German chamomile oil, this ingredient helps calm skin and reduces flaking.

SEEN’s Fragrance-Free Shampoo

This shampoo is fantastic. A little goes a long way, even in hard water. It foams up nicely without leaving my hair feeling stripped. I have no concerns about scrubbing my scalp; it works perfectly, without drying my dry scalp out further.

Bonus points: it is a light color and I am confident it will not stain my silver hair.

19 Simple Ingredients in the Shampoo:

Water, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide, Glycerin, Acrylates Copolymer, Glycol Distearate, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, C13-15 Alkane, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-7, Bisabolol, Citric Acid, Disodium Edta, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Aminomethyl Propanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Tocopherol, Sodium Benzoate

SEEN’s Fragrance-Free Conditioner:

As a curly girl, my first impression of the conditioner was not that great. It didn’t feel like it had much slip, but I quickly realized all it needs is a minute to soak in and a bit more water. I have hair to my waist so I need a fair amount (okay a lot) of conditioner. It was empty before the shampoo was gone, but that is something all curly girls are used to.

All that said, I have fallen in love with it, my hair feels soft, free of tangles and while it contains glycerin as long as I put in a leave-in or styler that is glycerin-free, my hair looks great.

15 Simple Ingredients in the Conditioner:

Water, C13-15 Alkane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Palmitate, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Behentrimonium Chloride, Shea Butter Cetyl Esters, Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Polysorbate 80, Citric Acid, Bisabolol, Disodium Edta, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tocopherol

SEEN’s Fragrance-Free Deeper Conditioner:

The new Deeper Conditioner is my new favorite. It is much more hydrating for dryer hair types like silver and curls, it is especially good in the dryer winter months. I am able to use a fair amount less than the regular conditioner.

This is not “deep conditioner” but add a little of the new Magic Serum and leave on a little longer it will be like a quick deep conditioning.

19 Hydrating Ingredients in the Deeper Conditioner:

Water/Aqua/Eau, Cetearyl Alcohol, C13-15 Alkane (plant derived), Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate, Cetyl Palmitate, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Behentrimonium Chloride, Shea Butter Cetyl Esters, Bisabolol, Glycerin, Polysorbate 80, Polyquaternium-37, Citric Acid, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Trideceth-6, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol

Excellent Stand-Alone Products:

I love that the shampoo and conditioner work perfectly on their own. I feel like I can use them forever as my base products. I have even tried multiple stylers and with only a couple of exceptions, they play well with others.

I love them so much, I did something I haven’t done in 20 years…I bought the liter sizes!

The SEEN Stylers:

Added Key Ingredients in the SEEN Stylers:

In addition to the Bisabolol and Hemisqualane this contains two hair healthy ingredients.

  1. Ceratonia siliqua (carob tree) a hydrolyzed protein

Increases hair elasticity and resilience, builds a barrier against damage, and strengthens the hair fiber.

  1. Moringa Oleifera (horseradish tree)

Offers pollution and UV protection for hair (but not skin). This is excellent news for silver curly sisters.

Both Styling Products are UV and HEAT Protectants.

SEEN’s Fragrance-Free Curly Crème:

I will have to preface, I normally would not have purchased the Curly Crème because I have figured out while living in the high & dry desert, my hair is sensitive to glycerin…my fine baby hairs turn into antennae seeking moisture and severe frizz occurs. For me rinse out glycerin is fine or glycerin as a lesser ingredient.

With that said, I went ahead and ordered the Curly Crème to see if it was something I could use under a foam. At first couple of uses it was frizz city, which was to be expected on MY hair.

I had to wait until today to test it in slightly more humid conditions, we had a rare 85% humidity because it snowed today. With a little mousse over it, it looks pretty nice. I do have a fair amount of halo frizz, but overall I feel like I can use it on more humid days.

Regardless of my experience, if you live in higher humidity and dew points, I encourage you to try this Crème as it has nice slip; my hair feels fantastic with it. The shine is a nice bonus too. I have found I actually enjoy using it on light conditioning days as a rinse out conditioner.

21 Simple Ingredients in the Curly Crème:

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, C13-15 Alkane, Glycerin, Shea Butter Cetyl Esters, Squalane, Behentrimonium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Ceratonia Siliqua Seed Extract, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract, Bisabolol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Tocopherol, Polyquaternium-7, Disodium EDTA, VP/VA Copolymer, Disodium Phosphate, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium

SEEN’s Fragranced Blow-Out Crème:

I decided when I reordered the liters of Shampoo and Conditioner to order the Blow-Out Crème with fragrance so I could tell you about the scent and try it for straightening my hair, which I rarely do. I avoid heat tools to protect my curls and my silver, but the key ingredients caught my attention.

The scent is light to medium, fresh, green, and floral; however, not an overwhelming or loud scent. It also dissipates relatively well. I still prefer the fragrance-free to the scented, just my personal preference.

It works great for straightening. My hair felt soft and silky and held the style for three days.

Key Ingredients:

In addition to the other key ingredients the Blow-Out Crème contains squalane oil, a frizz fighter, helps nourish hair, while soothing dry, flaky, and itchy scalp. It can also protect your hair from damage which makes it a perfect ingredient in a blow-dry product.

22 Simple Ingredients in the Blow-Out Crème:

Water, C13-15 Alkane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Squalane, Behentrimonium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Ceratonia Siliqua Seed Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract, Bisabolol, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Polyquaternium-7, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Vp/va Copolymer, Tocopherol, Disodium Edta, Ethylhexylglycerin, Potassium Sorbate, Disodium Phosphate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

SEEN Shampoo As A Face Wash???

This last summer my favorite face wash was reformulated. I had been using this brand and the same wash for about 15 years. So I was a little bit sore about the new formula, the main issues were it had a new fragrance and dried my skin out horribly.

I started looking for a new face wash and discovered something interesting… products high in Caprylic acid (a coconut oil fatty acid) would cause me to get these tiny pimples on my face. Especially, under the facemask days, maskne was happening. I ditched all my face products that had Caprylic acid and sure enough, those tiny pimples went away. I thought that was really odd, turns out, coconut oil and some of its derivatives are actually comedogenic, which finally explains some major issues I’ve had testing facial products.

My face doesn’t need fragrance any more than my hair does. Guess what? SEEN shampoo can be used as a face wash, so now as a curly girl you can imagine how awesome it is to throw out two bottles of less than perfect face cleansers and replace with my shampoo. Freed up some space in the shower!!! This is likely not a permeant solution, but it works for now.

My husband has a form of plaque psoriasis:

For as long as I have known him (20+ years now) Harry has had a form of plaque psoriasis on his scalp. We have tried everything from dandruff shampoo, to scalp treatment shampoos, to Manuka honey, with little lasting results. When I bought the liter size bottles, I took all his products out of the shower too.

I can personally attest to his scalp being much clearer. Since Covid began, I have been trimming his hair; his skin looks pink and healthy rather than the normal scaling, in under a month of use. It seems like what he needed was fragrance-free and skin friendly shampoo and conditioner*.

*This is not a medicated shampoo and conditioner, just so clean it helped reduce his reactions. He will still use his anti-dandruff shampoo.

Dollars and Sense About SEEN:

No doubt this is a Luxury Product, with good reason, Dr. Rubin did not want to compromise on great hair AND great skin. You really do get what you pay for, in this instance. I have personally tried everything from a dollar a bottle to $30 a bottle, with SEEN, I’m not paying for a flashy brand or a logo, or a fancy package design with a celebrity endorsement, I am paying for good, clean, quality. Don’t get me wrong, as a designer, I love the look, the logo, the website, it also is all very beautiful and clean.

What makes sense, now I’m paying for shampoo and conditioner that my husband and I can both use which is a first!

Don’t worry too much about the price though, there are multiple ways to save, by signing up for emails (the coupons are frequent), Save 10% if you Auto Renew, sign up for SEEN Rewards, and earn points for coupons and more.

And you can get 10% off with this QUICKSILVER10 coupon code. It’s a one-time use only code, with no expiration date. HELLOSEEN.com

Overall Conclusion:

For Sensitive Skin and Noses, For Silver Hair, For Curly Hair, For Straight Hair…there is something in this brand for everyone.

Iris named her company SEEN, because she felt like mid-breakout she didn’t want to be SEEN, and with clean products that don’t cause breakouts she knew we could all be SEEN!  SEEN has made me feel HEARD, I love that I finally have a fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner. Those of us with fragrance allergies are very underserved. It’s so nice to be HEARD and SEEN!

Thank you Iris for these products. You did a magnificent job!

Update since I wrote this post: I reached out to the owner’s of HelloSEEN and let them review this post. Later, I asked if they would allow me to be a SEEN Ambassador, and they said, “Yes!” So while there are affiliate links in this post, I was not paid by SEEN to write this post; however, now I may receive a small commission if you purchase product through one of my links. I truly love these products and I only recommend these products because I love them and use them every day.
