I said I wouldn’t test anymore hot brushes out after the great Shark debacle of 2022, but something came up. Shoulder surgery! After seeing a curly girl use one of these on her gorgeous waves and curls, I wanted to test this out for easy styling while I was recuperating from shoulder surgery.

I also wanted an alternative for styling my hair between washdays without flat ironing it. I don’t like flat ironing my hair since that is the fastest route to heat damage.  Not just the heat damage, but flat ironing my hair usually makes my hair look, well, flat.

I ordered the Paul Mitchell Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush after I checked out all the details because it sure was ticking off some of the boxes that I want when selecting heat tools for silver hair.

Joli with the Paul Mitchell Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush

It has been a long road to finding this tool, from overly hot tools, tools that I couldn’t hold because the handles weren’t made for people who have grip issues, and brushes that ripped my hair out or caused severe breakage. So I have been pleasantly surprised by the Paul Mitchell Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush.

I have six main criteria for a hot brush:

  1. Well-made.
  2. Proper temperature controls to be safer for gray hair.
  3. Gentle bristles to prevent breakage.
  4. Affordable.
  5. Handle that most anyone can hold and use easily.
  6. Bonus points if it is lightweight.

I decided to get it and give it a good honest review. In this post, I am sharing all the specs, the pros and cons, and if it gets my stamp of approval for silver-hair safe.

Check out all the Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush features, and watch me do my hair in this video:

Let’s take a look at the Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush:

  • The cord is a generous 9 feet long.
  • Very lightweight: only weighs 10 ounces.
  • Small brush-like handle
    • Great for those of us with issues in our wrists, hands, and shoulders.
  • Silent operation.
  • Two types of bristles:
    • Rubber like material that shift and move to prevent pulling and breakage,
    • Ceramic heating bristles every other row, which prevents too much direct heat contact with the hair.
  • SmartSense Microchip delivers optimal and even heat.
  • Negative Ions + Ceramic Bristles for shiny healthy-looking results.
  • 2023 NEW BEAUTY AWARD WINNER for BEST HOT SMOOTHING BRUSH
  • Maintains body:
    • I found this to be very true, I didn’t feel like my hair was totally flat like it is with a flat iron.
  • They claim it is perfect for freshening up styles and second-day touch-ups which is exactly why I bought it.
  • You can register it for a 2-year warranty…which I did because I chose to keep it.

The Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush Has A Wide Range of Heat Settings

It has 5 heat settings:

  1. Low heat is for very fine hair.
    • Paul Mitchell claims Low at 270°F, I read it with my infrared thermometer at ≈225°F.
  2. Low to Med heat is for fine hair.
    • Paul Mitchell claims Low-Med at 300°F and I measured it at ≈285°F ish.
  3. Medium heat is for medium hair.
    • Paul Mitchell claims Medium at 340°F, and I measured it at 340°F spot on.
  4. Med-High heat is for coarse hair.
    • Paul Mitchell claims Medium at 370°F, and I measured it at ≈360°F.
  5. High heat is for very coarse hair.
    • Paul Mitchell claims High at 410°F, and I measured it at ≈400-405°F.
    • I would not recommend high heat for anyone with silver hair to prevent yellowing.

What I Loved About The Paul Mitchell Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush:

  • I really like the bristles as I brushed through my hair, no pulling or breakage.
  • I also like that it is silent, no extremely loud blower in your ear like the Revlon Hot Brush.
  • It takes FIVE minutes to style my hair…that’s when I am in a hurry, but still delivers great results that last a couple of days.
  • I’ve tried several other hot brushes and this brush handle fits in your hand like a normal brush handle. I can use it without feeling like I can’t hold onto it or I am going to drop it.
  • It does what it says it will do, which is what I wanted. This isn’t blow out results or flat iron results, so don’t expect that.

Price of The Paul Mitchell Neuro Sleek Smoothing Hot Brush:

The price point is decent in my opinion:

I purchased this in Mid May 2024 and paid about $140 with taxes. I think that is pretty good given what it does for me!

Ceramic plate flat irons often run over $100, and hot brushes run anywhere from $40 to $500 if you are getting into the Dyson AirWrap and the attachments there.

This falls nicely on the lower end. Add in the 2-year warranty and you feel a little more confident with the price.

Plus, used on the right setting you don’t have the damage, which ends up saving your hair. Unfortunately, I have tried several hot brushes that ripped my hair out and caused breakage.

The Only Downsides:

  • You’ll need to use it in thin sections which will mean it takes longer if you have thicker or coarser hair.
  • Again, if you have silver hair I would not recommend using on high heat EVER!
  • Difficult to clean the bristles. I have been using it on second day hair and I have curl products in my hair, so there is product residue in it. It is not easy to get out, I did find this little thin brush and that has helped to dry brush the residue out.
