It happens sometimes, several of you will ask me about the exact same product. This time I had three of you, one right after the other, ask me if L’Oreal Le Color Gloss is safe for silver hair.
I looked into it and could not really determine what the ingredients were and how it worked.
I decided to ordered it, I used it on my own hair, and I tested it on light and dark gray hair samples.
If you are curious about trying a gloss you’ll want to keep reading.
In this post, I am sharing all the details, the pros and cons, before and after photos, and if it gets my stamp of approval for silver-hair safe.
I wanted to make sure these toners were safe for you if you have a permanent form of yellowing that you want to tone out.
The main criteria for a toning product:
- Non-irritating
- Unscented or unobtrusive scent
- Actually tones yellow tones out of gray hair
- Affordable
- Easy to use at home

L’Oréal Le Color Gloss Comes in Four Color Choices for Silver & Gray Hair
Each of the four choices has a specific toning effect to neutralize unwanted yellow tones for different shades of gray:
- Silver White – for natural white or gray hair with a silver finish.
- Silver – for natural gray or white, color treated silver, and bleached blonde hair.
- Silver Opal – adds a soft rose tone to naturally graying or white hair.
- Silver Slate – adds a deep slate gray tone to naturally dark gray hair.

What is L’Oréal Le Color Gloss?
- Le Color Gloss is used to boost shine, condition, and enhance color
- Without damaging your hair
- It can be used on naturally gray or white hair
- Deep conditions (supposedly, more on that in a moment)
The formula is ammonia-free, and does not lift, cover, or lighten the natural color of the hair
This is a direct dye formula which means it functions like a purple shampoo or conditioner. It only deposits color on the surface of the hair and lasts temporarily.
When Should You Use L’Oréal Le Color Gloss:
- Once a week
I am assuming this is for someone who washes their hair more than once a week. If you wash your hair once a week or less you probably would only need to use this once a month.
How Long Does L’Oréal Le Color Gloss Last?
- It lasts approximately 10 days
- Depends on hair type
- Hair damage or porosity
- And how often you wash your hair
L’Oréal Le Color Gloss Instructions:
- Apply to clean damp hair
- Leave on for up 5-15 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly
- Apply again if more toning is desired
L’Oréal Le Color Gloss SILVER Ingredients:
Aqua/Water/Eau, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Behentrimonium Chloride, Propylene Glycol, Amodimethicone, Sclerotium Gum, Isopropyl Alcohol, Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum/Fragrance, Ethanolamine, Citric Acid, Cocos Nucifera Oil/Coconut Oil, Trideceth-6,HC blue no.2, c1 60730/Acid Violet 43, Linalool, Hexyl Cinnamal, Chlorhexidine Digluconate, Benzyl Salicylate, Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene, Cetrimonium Chloride, Amyl Cinnamal, Coumarin, Sodium Lignosulfonate, Citronellol, HC BLUE NO. 14, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, 2-Nitro-5-Glyceryl Methylaniline, Caprylyl Glycol
The ingredients are similar on the other three gray specific toners: Silver White, Silver Opal, and Silver Slate.
My Results:
I ordered the colors Silver and Silver White.
Once they arrived and I could read the boxes, I determined the Silver White was the one for my hair type.
I assumed because I have low porosity hair chances were good it wasn’t going to do much for me. I used a different gloss during my transition to gray, so I felt safe using this.
But worth testing for those of you who want a toning and gloss product.
Easy enough to apply, I didn’t need much, and I left it on for ten minutes.
As I suspected, there was little to no effect on my hair.

The Major Downside:
The smell is obnoxious. Terrible! It is so synthetic and so strong, which I knew going in, as L’Oréal fragrances have always been an issue for me.
Day one my eyes burned and I could taste it. I could smell it in my hair for days even with shampooing and other conditioner that had scent. I was able to still smell the synthetic fragrance underneath my leave-in and gel.
I managed to get through it, but I decided I just could not try it again.
My Personal Thoughts About the Le Color Gloss:
- My hair felt silky and soft, and was definitely shinier.
- I have some curl clumps that I didn’t know still existed, unexpected bonus.
- The next day my hair felt horrible, which indicates to me it is not truly a deep conditioner.
- I really couldn’t tell it did any toning, at all, on my low porosity dye resistant hair.

Le Color Gloss Tested on Gray Hair Samples:
Since I could not try the product again due to the fragrance issues and lack of results on my dye resistant hair, I decided to see what it did on my gray hair samples. I have platinum blonde and dark gray samples that are medium to high porosity, I was sure this would give me a really good idea how the Le Color Gloss performs on non-dye-resistant hair.
- Applied to each sample as instructed
- On damp hair
- Left on for ten minutes
- Rinsed and dried
- Photographed
Then I clarified as the box says it can be removed with clarifying shampoo, so I wanted to see how much clarifying one time removed color from my medium-high porosity samples.
I photographed them again. I think they look better toned after clarifying.
The Results Were Obvious:
- Le Color Gloss does really tone on medium to higher porosity hair.
- Clarifying did tone down the purple hue but didn’t remove it. The results were a lovely soft silver hue on both samples colors.
They worked very well on my darker samples, I was actually impressed at how nice they looked.
Does L’Oréal Le Color Gloss get my Silver-Safe stamp of approval?
The question remains: Does it get my Silver-Hair-Safe stamp of approval? Yes, it does!!! With a word of caution.
The only thing I cannot promise is how long it will take to wash out of your hair but L’Oreal says 10 washes.

ALWAYS DO A TEST SECTION:
If you are at all concerned about coloring your silvers and them being permanently stained do a test section underneath. If you love your silvers, err on the side of caution. If you have fine or low porosity hair you will likely see less intense results, and they may not last as long as someone with coarse or higher porosity hair.
I hope you found this post educational and helpful.

As always it is about so much more than the hair.
